This Tangle is the Texture of the World

For trumpet and electronics, composed for/with Hilde Marie Holsen

Commissioned by Scottish Music Centre, sound and Ultima Contemporary Music Festival

This Tangle is the Texture of the World is another piece inspired by the work of anthropologist Tim Ingold following on from The Sound of the Letters, the Voice of the Page, Soundlines: After Ingold and parts of Tide Times.

This tangle… is a creative response to Ingold’s notion of that all living creatures leave a ‘trail along which life is lived’, and that these trails interconnect in a meshwork. In this piece Hilde and I expressed this through the relationship between the trumpet and electronics, where the two parts tangle together, each of their lines occasionally emerging from the overall texture, but for the most part entangled within one another.

Huge thanks from me to the commissioners, and especially the amazing Hilde Marie Holsen, who was the perfect collaborator for this piece, and whose creativity is indelibly marked upon this piece.
